Minnesota fur farm burns to the ground
Massive fire destroys main building at Detroit Lakes fur farm, fire called accidental.
Days after activists released 450 mink from a fur farm across the state, the main building at a large Minnesota fur farm has gone up in flames. The daytime fire is being called “accidental,” and early speculation is that it may have been caused by a spark from an incinerator.
With 50,000 mink, the Sonnenberg Mink Farm is one of the biggest, if not the biggest, mink farms in the state. Detroit Lakes is home to at least five mink farms, with the empty remains of several closed farms also scattered across town.
The building destroyed was said to house all mink feed and equipment used on the farm.
Three fur industry targets suffer recent accidental fires
The fur industry has seen a suspicious number of accidental fires in the past two years. In December 2011, what may be the largest fur farm feed supplier in the country went up in flames. The Utah Fur Breeder’s Agricultural Cooperative’s main plant caught fire from a welder’s torch, and was a total loss.
And in May 2012, an empty mink shed at Lion Farms in Nottingham, Indiana was destroyed by a fire that was called accidental.
What remains of the main building at the Sonnenberg Mink Farm will have to be torn down and rebuilt from scratch.

Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Reporter: “The good news is none of the animals were hurt.”
Oh, so it’s good news they were saved from being burned alive so that they can be skinned alive? What a stupid statement.
There were no animals in the building – it was used to house equipment only. Very expensive equipment I imagine. Although indicated that this was an accidental fire, some people may point the finger at the Animal Liberation Movement. Others may query whether these vile ‘industries’ are quite as lucrative as they used to be – an insurance claim would come in very handy to any business (a) in financial difficulty or (b) wishing to implicate the ALM.
The good news is that insurance companies will be raising premiums sky high at some point. That is, if they are willing to insure this filthy trade at all. Time for these Neanderthals to pack up their tools and bugga off for good!
Dearie me…. could it have been an accident or was it sabotage? Fur ‘farming’ is really not the lucrative bloody business it used to be is it?! I do hope Mr. “Farmer” was well insured. I guess insurance companies will be thinking twice about involvement with these very risky enterprises in future!
That`s the best thing that could have happened to it.
that fire was probably intentionally set by the owners of that farm just so they could blame it on ALF!
IMO NOT “accidental fire”. The minks are lost so what be3tter way to get your money back. Yep start a fire and insurance pays for the loss. I’m sure it’ll be a big one. 🙁 🙁 🙁 A/H
GOOD! Hope it happens again if they rebuild
I wish all those evil and vile places
Would vanish from the face of the
earth, along with the research labs,
Factory farms and the other places that
torture and abuse the animals of the world.
More than likely fire was started by owners to recoup their losses from the lose of the minks. Also good way to blame Alf if it is proved it was intentionally set.
Good thing he didnt show his face. Hope his farm burns down again. He is a terrorist and mass killer. Karma will get him.
the bad new is that you will have to re-build! That’s the biggest joke I’ve heard all day!
i work at a fur farm and thats how i pay my bills. im just a worker and dont own mink but if people let the mink out i go hungry. i know its a bad way to make money but so is a lot of things we do to survive i this world. they are cute animals but they attack almost every time they get a chance.
its probably an insurance con.these fithy creatures will hopefully go out of business pretty quick, and i hope the insurers dont pay out,its too nmuch of a coincidence that all these fsrmw are combusting ! happy days!!
WELL SAID ANN PARKES!!
I love my mink hat 🙂
